ØsterGRO, Østerbro
A living rooftop landscape featuring vegetable gardening and community
If you walk around the back of an ordinary building in the Klimakvarteret neighborhood of Østerbro and follow the spiral staircase up to the third floor, an unexpected landscape opens up—namely, the ØsterGRO rooftop farm. Here, atop the former Nellemann car auction house, the city has been replaced by soil, greenhouses, beehives, and green beds, where the changing seasons can be observed up close. Here, not only are vegetables grown, but also an understanding of where food comes from and how a local ecosystem can function on a small scale right in the middle of the city.
ØsterGRO is an experiment, a community, and a green oasis rising above the city—a place where you can sense how a different kind of urban nature and food culture can take shape when you look up from street level. At the same time, the rooftop farm serves as a social gathering place where dinners, tours, and community workdays are held, during which members and volunteers help tend to the plants, chickens, and beehives. The collaboration with surrounding organic farms also provides crops that cannot be grown on the roof, thereby connecting the city with the surrounding agricultural landscape.
