Cobblestones, fountains, and local city life in the heart of Inner Østerbro

Melchiors Plads is located between Nordre Frihavnsgade and Marstalsgade in Indre Østerbro and is one of the neighborhood’s most distinctive squares. Here, cobblestones, flower beds, and trees come together in an urban space that feels both green and urban. In the middle of the square, a fountain trickles, its soft sound creating a peaceful contrast to the bustle of the busy shopping street. Graffiti on the surrounding surfaces gives the place a raw and informal feel, setting the square apart from many of Østerbro’s more polished urban spaces. It is a square that invites people to linger, yet remains closely connected to the neighborhood’s pulse.

The atmosphere is local and relaxed. Copenhagen-style benches with small tables provide space for a cup of coffee, a game of chess, or a chat in the sun, while outdoor seating spills out onto the square. Here, regulars and passersby, dog walkers, and families with children come together, and the square serves as a natural gathering place in the neighborhood. Some linger for hours, while others simply pass through the space on their way between the side streets and the shops on Nordre Frihavnsgade. No matter the time of day, there is almost always activity around the fountain, the benches, and the surrounding cafés.

The square is named after the merchant Moritz G. Melchior, who lived on the nearby Rolighed estate in the second half of the 19th century. The distinctive block-style buildings surrounding the square were constructed around 1890 and bear witness to Østerbro’s development from a suburb to an attractive Copenhagen neighborhood. For many years, tram line 3 had its terminus here, making the square an important local hub. Today, Melchiors Plads is best known for Jazz at Melchiors Plads, which, during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, transforms the urban space into an intimate outdoor stage created in collaboration with local restaurants, artists, and passionate volunteers. It is a tradition that beautifully reflects the square’s role as a gathering place for both culture and community in Østerbro.
