Langelinie Promenade, Østerbro
- 6,000 m²
- 2024
A rustic yet stylish harbor-themed space with a long table, ocean views, and room to relax
The Langelinie Shed stands as an elongated, unobtrusive building on the Østerbro waterfront, between the Little Mermaid and the gleaming glass of the cruise terminal. On top of the iconic shed runs a promenade deck—a single, continuous strip of wood and granite—offering views in all directions and access to one of the city’s most overlooked wonders: a 100-meter-long table, cast directly into the urban space. The deck also features petanque courts, inviting visitors to linger and fostering a sense of community.
The atmosphere on the promenade is calm, raw, and almost meditative. There is no traffic, no storefronts, no noise—only the sound of water, birds, and quiet conversation. The long communal table serves as both a social gathering spot and a destination in its own right, where you can settle in alone to enjoy the view or gather friends for a picnic and a shared meal. The interplay of granite, steel, and wood creates a balanced aesthetic that supports both the spontaneous and the planned. The petanque courts and small landscaped spaces give the area an informal character, while the promenade deck itself serves as an architectural bridge between the sea and the city.
The shed beneath the promenade once served as part of Copenhagen’s free port—a workspace for industry, freight, and logistics. Today, it stands as a testament to the port’s history, but with a new layer of life and open urban space. The long table, the promenade, and the green details are intended as permanent features—not as temporary experiments. Here, the city’s transformation is tangible: from industry to recreation, from closed off to inviting. And precisely because it’s all a bit out of the way, the site is allowed to be the city’s new blue-green urban space—and one of the most peaceful.
