A touch of fairy magic amid Nordhavn’s rugged harbor landscape

Tucked away among Nordhavn’s rugged harbor areas and industrial districts stands Captain Nalle. With a rope in his hand, he pulls his ship through the landscape like a modern harbor captain heading toward new adventures. Captain Nalle is part of the fantasy universe The Giant Troll Festival, created by the Danish recycling artist Thomas Dambo. Captain Nalle is one of the artist’s many trolls, hiding in landscapes and urban spaces throughout Denmark and the rest of the world.

The troll fits perfectly into the old part of Nordhavn, where the maritime history is still visible among the quays, industrial areas, and new urban spaces. At the same time, it exemplifies the playful approach to art that characterizes many of Thomas Dambo’s works. Captain Nalle isn’t hidden away, but you still have to venture a bit off the beaten path to find him—and that’s precisely part of the experience.
