A cozy oasis with cafés and history in the heart of Østerbro
Nestled between Østerbro’s quieter streets and the bustling heart of the city, Bopa Plads emerges as a green and vibrant oasis. Located close to both Fælledparken and Nordre Frihavnsgade, the square serves as an informal gathering place for both locals and visitors. Here you’ll find small cafés with outdoor seating, a playground for the little ones, and shade beneath the trees—an ideal stop on a stroll through Østerbro.
The atmosphere here is relaxed and cozy. Children play freely in the center while parents sip coffee at the outdoor seating area. Young people hang out on benches with takeout from the neighborhood’s many restaurants, and older folks enjoy the sun with a newspaper. It’s one of those places where you don’t need a plan—just drop by and hang out. All year round, Bopa Plads buzzes with everyday life, and in the summer, it takes on an almost Mediterranean feel.
The name comes from the resistance group BOPA, which operated in the area during World War II. Originally, the area consisted of backyards and apartment blocks, but as part of urban renewal, the space was opened up and transformed into a green, public urban space. The history still lingers in the walls, but today, everyday life and a sense of community have taken over.
