A local urban atmosphere with a town square, trees, and outdoor dining
Østerfælled Torv is an open and spacious urban space in the heart of Østerbro, just behind Østerbrogade and a few steps from Fælledparken. The square has been completely renovated and serves as a local gathering place where you can do your shopping, enjoy a cup of coffee in the sun, or simply take a break between errands. With its central location and wide, open space, Østerfælled Torv is one of Østerbro’s most functional and accessible urban spaces.
The square is large enough to let you feel the city’s pulse, yet green and open enough to let you breathe. Rows of trees provide shade and a sense of rhythm, and there’s almost always someone sitting there with a cup of coffee or a sandwich from one of the nearby eateries. On weekends, there are often more families with children here, while weekdays are characterized by local residents, cyclists, and people on their way to and from work. Outdoor dining dominates during the summer months, and the square transforms into a sort of informal “open-air stage” with room for both tranquility and casual encounters.
The square is located on the former site of the Østerfælled Barracks and was transformed into a residential and commercial area in the late 1990s. The distinctive red-brick buildings that now frame the square bear witness to the site’s military past, while the square itself was created as part of the new urban planning. Today, Østerfælled Torv serves as an example of how formerly closed-off areas can be opened up and transformed into active and integrated parts of city life—while retaining a distinct architectural character.
