A sensory and inclusive urban space beneath the elevated railway in Nordhavn.

Orientkaj Activity Square is located beneath the striking elevated metro tracks at Orientkaj Station and is one of Nordhavn’s most unique urban spaces. Where one might expect shade and a thoroughfare, one is instead greeted by an open and inviting space designed for relaxation, play, and movement. Beneath the metro’s columns, there is room for both activity and rest, and the area serves as a natural meeting place between the neighborhood’s residential areas, the waterfront, and public transportation. It is a place where people of all ages can gather, whether they come to play, exercise, meet up, or simply settle in for a moment.

The Activity Plaza is part of the development of Nordhavn as a neighborhood where community, mobility, and quality of life are integrated. Rather than treating the area beneath the elevated railway as a leftover space, it has been transformed into an active urban space that adds value to the neighborhood and brings life to the area around the station. The plaza demonstrates how even the most functional parts of the city can become places where people meet, linger, and create new everyday experiences. The name Orientkaj derives from the original wharf in the eastern part of the free port, where goods from Asia and the Far East were once unloaded. Today, Orientkaj is not just a physical wharf, but also a marker of the city’s expansion toward the horizon. The metro station opened in 2020 as the terminal station for the M4 line and has since served as a central gateway to Nordhavn. The square itself and the surrounding areas are still evolving, but already Orientkaj stands as one of the places where you can sense that the city is in motion—physically, architecturally, and mentally.
