A historic fortress complex where moats and green paths create a peaceful oasis in the heart of Copenhagen

Behind moats, cobblestone gates, and old barracks lies Kastellet—one of Europe’s best-preserved fortresses and, at the same time, one of Copenhagen’s most atmospheric places to take a stroll. Here, gravel paths wind along the ramparts among old trees, benches, and green slopes, while the water in the moat follows you around the distinctive star-shaped fortress.

Kastellet is a place where history and everyday life come together. On one hand, there are the red-washed buildings, the old mill, and the military fortifications that serve as reminders of the area’s past as a defensive stronghold. On the other hand, the area is now used by runners, walkers, and visitors seeking tranquility in the heart of the city. At Kastellet, you can follow the paths around the ramparts, settle down on a bench overlooking the moat, or explore the monuments, sculptures, and historic buildings. From the ramparts, beautiful views open up toward the harbor, Langelinie, the Marble Church, and the surrounding historic buildings.

At the heart of the complex stands Kastel Church, built in 1704 as a garrison church for the fortress’s soldiers. Together with the tree-lined avenues, the red buildings, and the open squares, this simple Baroque church forms one of the city’s most cohesive historic settings. The Citadel is a place where the pace of the big city slows down, and where more than 350 years of Copenhagen history are still visible in the landscape.

Local tip
Take a walk along the ramparts in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light hits the red buildings and the treetops. Then continue on to Langelinie, where the view of the harbor and the Øresund adds an extra dimension to the walk.
