An open urban space with a view of the horizon, culture, and the sea breeze in the heart of Nordhavn
Göteborg Plads is an open and modern urban space in Nordhavn that connects the waterfront, culture, and city life in the heart of the new neighborhood surrounding the Århusgade district. The square lies directly adjacent to the harbor basin and forms a natural transition between retail, residential areas, and the water. Here, you can enjoy the view of the harbor channel, take a break on one of the wide stair sections, or let the children play on the open spaces. The square serves as a social hub and a relaxed gathering place for both locals and visitors to the area.
The atmosphere is airy and calm, yet vibrant. There is always movement—cyclists, pedestrians, and people with coffee to go—but at the same time, a sense of tranquility emerges where the concrete meets the sky and the sea. The wide open spaces and clean lines invite you to linger, and there is a special sensory quality in the contrast between the architecture’s sharp edges and the gentle ripples of the water. The square has an urban, laid-back vibe where you can sit alone in silence or meet up with others without having to make a big plan out of it.
The square is named after the Swedish port city of Gothenburg and was built as part of the extensive urban development in Nordhavn. Previously, the area was characterized by an industrial port and warehouses, but today Göteborg Plads stands as a symbol of the transformation from a workplace to a living space. The square serves as a cultural and architectural link in a neighborhood undergoing change—and a concrete expression of how to build community around space and rhythm.
A prominent landmark on Göteborg Plads is Portland Towers, two former cement silos built in 1979 that were converted into 59-meter-tall office buildings in 2013–2014, based on designs by Design Group Architects.
